About Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben

"If it isn't broken, why fix it?" When a property boasts over two centuries of history, the norm is to uphold traditions and follow the path laid by predecessors. However, Ernst "Erni" Loosen chose to challenge that notion. Upon assuming leadership of the family winery in the late 1980s, he discovered that the true treasure lay not only in its history but in its exceptional vineyards teeming with old vines, whose potential had yet to be fully realised. Rather than settling, he embraced a new approach to Riesling. That decision altered the winery's course, establishing it as a global benchmark.

Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben epitomises this vision. Hailing from the renowned subregion of the Middle Mosel in Germany, this wine originates from one of the most spectacular sites in the wine world. It is cultivated in the legendary Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard, whose name translates literally as "the spice garden of Ürzig." The grapes thrive in a dramatic amphitheatre with slopes reaching up to a 70% gradient, where the old vines, locally known as Alte Reben, often surpass a century in age and remain on their original rootstock, ungrafted onto American rootstock. The soil is entirely unique to the area, composed of red volcanic slate rich in iron, a rare terrain that imparts a distinctively spicy and exotic profile. The climate is cool, typical of the Mosel River valley, with privileged solar exposure on the hillside allowing for very slow and gradual ripening. The variety is Riesling, cultivated under a philosophy of sustainable farming and absolute respect for the ecosystem's biodiversity through meticulous manual harvesting.

For the production of Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben, the winery implements a rigorous and procedural approach to achieve the Grosses Gewächs (GG) level, the official category designating Germany's great dry wines. The hand-harvested grapes, picked at optimal ripeness, are transported to the winery, where a meticulous selection takes place. After a gentle pressing to extract the highest quality free-run juice, the alcoholic fermentation, the process in which yeasts convert the natural grape sugars into alcohol, begins spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The wine ferments and matures in large traditional oak foudres, neutral vessels allowing for slow micro-oxygenation without imparting wood flavours. Finally, it remains in contact with its fine lees for 12 months before bottling.

Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben is a superb, magnetic, and profoundly complex wine. A bottle that illustrates how the courage to question tradition can ultimately elevate it to the highest echelons.
