About Château Rauzan-Ségla

When we talk about Chanel, the first thing that comes to mind are their bags, shoes, accessories and the trends that surprise us on the world’s most coveted catwalks, year after year. However, the glamour of this brand doesn’t end here.  In recent years it has turned into a powerful luxury group that has also become interested in the wine business. The first winery they bought in 1994 was Château Rauzan-Ségla in Margaux (France), an estate classified as 2nd Cru in 1855 and named after Pierre des Mesures de Rauzan, a Bordeaux wine merchant who acquired the estate in 1661. Later, in 1766, the Baroness of Ségla added her name to it. However, although the maison had long been considered alongside Mouton Rothschild as one of the leading and most important Margaux wineries, it had unfortunately lost its prestige in recent times. It is thanks to being taken over by the Wertheimer brothers (sole and independent owners of the Chanel Group) that a resurgence began. The investments made around 1990 and the hiring of winemaker John Kolasa were responsible for setting the course to recover the profitability and prestige that the estate deserved.

Since 2014, the winery has been managed by Nicolas Audebert, former winemaker of the powerful Argentine winery Cheval des Andes. Under his guidance, they make Château Rauzan-Ségla, a typically Bordeaux coupage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes from 35-year-old vines on fine gravel soils with a limited yield of 37 hl/ha. They are cultivated using environmentally-friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. The best grapes are selected in the winery and fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. Finally, the wine ages for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The result is a real spectacle. Château Rauzan-Ségla is a wine that exudes glamour, maintains incredible freshness and makes you wonder what it will be like in 20 years. A marvel to keep hold of that will help you understand the full greatness of Bordeaux.
