Spanish red wine
Discover the Spanish red wines selected by our sommeliers.
Spain is home to an array of varieties and styles of red wine thanks to the great diversity of the climates and soils on offer: from the fresh and fruity Atlantic red wines to Mediterranean red wines, which generally have a higher concentration. Depending on the ageing process, red wines in Spain can be classified as young, crianza, reserva or gran reserva from well known Denominaciones de Origen such as La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, Bierzo and Toro. In regards to the grape varieties used to produce Spanish reds, the options are almost unlimited: from the classic Tempranillo variety to Pinot Noir, a grape variety more characteristic to colder climates, as well as many other varieties including Garnacha, Mencía, Monastrell, Merlot and Syrah.
-
The heart of tempranillo: this variety forms the backbone of two of our most illustrious regions. In Rioja, tempranillo offers elegance and a legendary ageing potential; in Ribera del Duero, it becomes more structured, powerful, and profound.
-
The garnacha revolution: for years it was the great forgotten, but today it shines brightly. From the mineral freshness of the Gredos mountains to the intensity and character of Priorat, garnacha gifts us vibrant wines, full of fruit and elegance.
-
The Atlantic freshness: in the northwest, the mencía grape takes centre stage. In regions like Bierzo or Ribeira Sacra, it produces fluid, perfumed reds with a minerality reminiscent of northern freshness.
-
The Mediterranean character: further south and east, monastrell in Jumilla or Alicante, and bobal in Utiel-Requena, bring warmth, body, and a ripeness that tastes of sun and earth.
