About Sindicat La Figuera Rosat

In 2004, the family of René Barbier, both father and son, were in the midst of their search for Grenache grapes to make wines. His assignment was to work for La Universal; however, it seemed that no variety was up to the task. And suddenly, as is often the way, they came across a few bunches of Grenache from the cooperative in the village of La Figuera, in the D.O. Montsant, in the Catalan Priorat.

René Barbier set himself up there. He couldn’t miss this chance. And he liked what he tasted here very much. The next step was to reach an agreement with the cooperative members: he agreed to bottle and work with their wine (at no cost) in exchange for grapes for his project at La Universal. The cooperative members accepted and that was the beginning of two wines: Venus de la Figuera and Sindicat La Figuera Rosat.

However, the road wasn’t easy. In 2014, nothing could be salvaged from the first vintage (except for the batch set aside for René’s project). Everything was rotten. They had to wait for the following year. And they finally hit the jackpot, when all the bottles of Sindicat La Figuera Rosat were sold and the wine enjoyed a spectacular reception. Very soon the public began to appreciate the unique character of this wine, which reflects the particular characteristics of La Figuera. Specifically, this village is located at the highest point of the region (about 550 metres above sea level) and they only cultivate the Grenache variety, finding real gems like old vineyards, some of which are even 80 years old. The cool climate is the main reason for the smooth and citric profile of this wine, the only one in the area with such a light character.

René’s team is joined by six other partners who gradually refine the techniques both in the vineyard (where herbicides have been eliminated) and in the winery. Even so, the cooperative members couldn’t see it clearly, and made a proposal: they would continue to be involved with the grapes while the administrative and technical management would be passed to La Universal. Another plot twist in this story. Finally, fermentation in cement is the finishing touch that makes Sindicat de la Figuera so special.

2021

Sindicat La Figuera Rosat 2021 is a fresh, cherry-coloured, juicy and fruity rosé. Ripe red fruit aromas appear on the nose with Mediterranean herbs and spicy touches. The palate is light, with great intensity. Perfect balance between juiciness and acidity. Rustic but sweet tannins. Slightly liqueur-like finish with a certain mineral background.
