About Charles Joguet Les Charmes Blanc

There are names that become inseparable from a place, and in Chinon, on the banks of the Loire, one such name is Charles Joguet. However, intriguingly, wine was not his destiny... at least, not initially.

In his youth, Charles did not dream of barrels or grapes basking under the Vienne sun. His passions were brushes, colours, and the bohemian cafés of Paris. He left for the capital to mingle with artists and let his creativity flow onto canvases. Yet life had other plans.

When his father passed away, Joguet was compelled to return to the family estate in Sazilly. Lacking oenological training, without school or manual, he chose to trust his instincts. And those instincts were pure artistry. He began vinifying each parcel separately, understanding that each piece of land had its own character, its own “accent.” It was a small revolution for the time, and soon his name and that of the Chinon appellation began to resonate beyond the Loire.

Today, the legacy continues in the hands of Kévin Fontaine, who keeps alive the free and curious spirit that defined Charles.

Among his treasures is Les Charmes Blanc, a wine born from a parcel of over 2 hectares in Anché, on the left bank of the Vienne. The clay-limestone soil is a genuine treasure for chenin blanc, which here expresses itself with incredible precision.

The yield is low — barely 35 hl/ha, sometimes less — and the harvest is carried out in several passes, selecting only the grapes at their exact point of ripeness. After a gentle pneumatic pressing, the wine ferments slowly in 225-litre barrels (one-third new), within a cool cellar fluctuating between 5 and 13°C.

The batonnage — that delicate stirring of the lees — imparts texture and depth. Following 3 months of fermentation and between 4 and 6 months of ageing, the wine is assembled in stainless steel tanks to achieve perfect integration before bottling. A few more months of rest complete its maturation and reveal the full purity of the terroir.

The result is Les Charmes Blanc, a vibrant and mineral chenin that, like its creator, was not born to follow rules, but to leave a lasting impression.
