The tropical sweetness of pineapple and banana is also discernible, accompanied by a whisper of fine vanilla and honey that intertwines its sweetness with white flowers on a balsamic backdrop. Upon tasting, it reveals a creamy and velvety texture, with a perfectly integrated citrus touch of grapefruit and a finish that unfolds with cut hay and a subtle toasted note. This wine stands out for its length, its rich texture, and its persistent balsamic aftertaste, underscored by a mineral finish that reflects its origin in limestone soils. About Blanco de Matasnos

Opting to cultivate white grapes in a region renowned for its illustrious and robust reds may appear audacious. Yet, in the realm of viticulture, truly remarkable ventures are born from such boldness, from the courage to defy norms and heed the land’s call. In the heart of a plateau battered by wind and cold, the estate proves that when the environment is revered, the surprises are unforgettable. This white wine shatters conventions and preconceptions, emerging not as an anomaly, but as the natural outcome of a privileged ecosystem where altitude, forest density, and human endeavour converge to offer something genuinely authentic.

From Peñaranda de Duero, in the province of Burgos, Blanco de Matasnos is crafted under the designation Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. The vines are located at the Bosque de Matasnos estate, a biodiversity haven situated at an extreme altitude of nearly 1,000 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest chardonnay vineyards in Spain. The soil is clay-limestone, a combination where clay retains just the right amount of moisture and limestone imparts notable freshness and mineral tension. The climate is predominantly continental with Atlantic influences, characterised by a marked thermal variation between sunny days and cold nights. This thermal contrast delays grape ripening, preserving impeccable natural acidity and extraordinary aromatic concentration. The blend marries the elegance of chardonnay with the nuances of viognier and the expressiveness of verdejo. Cultivation adheres to a philosophy of absolute respect for the surrounding forest's biodiversity, employing sustainable viticulture and entirely manual harvesting in small crates to prevent fruit damage.

The production of Blanco de Matasnos adheres to an uncompromising quest for purity and volume. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes undergo a dual-belt selection process. Initially, a manual inspection of the bunches is conducted, followed by a berry-by-berry classification using optical vision and density, applying the same rigorous qualitative criteria used for the estate's renowned red wines. To enhance complexity and richness on the palate, the final wine is a blend of two very distinctive vintages. The wine undergoes fermentation and a 4-month ageing in new French oak barrels of 500 litres capacity, with extra-fine grain and medium toast, a larger size than usual to integrate the wood while respecting the fruit. Subsequently, the wine spends 10 months in concrete vats, a porous material that allows for natural micro-oxygenation, refining the wine and enhancing its freshness, acidity, and aromatic complexity before bottling.

Blanco de Matasnos is a complex white wine, with vibrant acidity and a silky texture that envelops the palate with notes of white fruit, nuances of orange blossom, and subtly smoky undertones. An unexpected gem in the land of reds.
