About ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Inferno Fiamme Antiche

ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Inferno Fiamme Antiche is a red wine produced in Valtellina, located in the northern region of Italy (Lombardy), a mountainous area at the foothills of the Alps characterized by steep slopes and granite-origin soils, particularly in the Adda River valley.

The Pelizzatti family embarked on their winemaking journey in 1860, establishing over time a significant heritage in various subzones of Valtellina, such as Grumello, Sassella, and Inferno. In the 1970s, the winery underwent a sale to a Swiss group, which later integrated into larger business structures within the sector. In the mid-1980s, the family resumed the winemaking project, giving rise to the current designation ARPEPE. Unable to reclaim the use of their family name as a commercial brand, the winery adopted the acronym ARPEPE and has established itself as a benchmark in the production of mountain wines in Valtellina.

The wine is crafted from the Nebbiolo grape variety cultivated in the Inferno subzone, one of the warmest areas of Valtellina, where higher temperatures promote an earlier ripening of the grape. The vineyards are situated at approximately 450 metres above sea level and are tended manually, without the use of pesticides.

Following the harvest, the grapes for ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Inferno Fiamme Antiche undergo an extended maceration of about 104 days. The ageing process spans approximately eighteen months, combining the use of wooden vats, stainless steel tanks, and a final period in bottle, with the aim of refining the wine's profile and reflecting the mineral character of the region's soils.

2019

ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Inferno Fiamme Antiche 2019 is a concentrated red wine, with a garnet hue and orange reflections. On the nose, it initially presents fruity notes (cherry, plum) and develops into nuances of nutmeg and clove. On the palate, it is clean and tannic, yet remarkably subtle. Exceptionally elegant.
