About Viúva Gomes Colares Branco

Viúva Gomes Colares Branco is a barrel-aged white wine made with the Malvasía variety by the Viúva Gomes winery in the DOC Colares, Lisbon.

Viúva Gomes is an old winery that was founded in 1808 in the centre of Almocageme, a small town in the Portuguese municipality of Sintra. In 1988 the winery was bought by the Baeta family to age their own wines. However, now, José and his son Diogo are in charge of the entire production process having acquired 2.5 hectares of their own vineyards overlooking the Atlantic.

Viúva Gomes Colares Branco comes from old vines planted in sandy soil. These vineyards lie along the narrow sandy strip of land that almost touches the Atlantic Ocean, northwest of Lisbon. They use environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

In the winery, the Viúva Gomes Colares Branco grapes are meticulously selected, destemmed and gently pressed. The resulting must is fermented in stainless steel tanks. Finally, the wine ages in used French oak barrels for 6 months.

Viúva Gomes Colares Branco is a fresh and saline wine that starts life by the sea. A white with a strong Atlantic character.

2018 Viúva Gomes Colares Branco 2018 is a white wine with maritime and iodised aromas. On the palate it is fresh, dry and complex. A wine with vibrant acidity and a strong mineral character.
