There are words that are used so frequently they end up losing their impact. Special, for instance. Nowadays, everything is special: a dinner, a plan, even an ordinary Tuesday. However, in the world of wine — when truly used — it signifies something different. It signifies that something remarkable has occurred. It signifies that it will not be easily repeated. And that is precisely what happens with Viña Alberdi Selección Especial Reserva.

Here, "special" is not marketing; it is history. And moreover, doubly so.

On one hand, because La Rioja Alta is one of the few wineries in Rioja that takes nothing for granted. There are years when they outright decide not to produce certain categories if the harvest does not meet their standards. Just like that. And when something truly stands out, they highlight it. They mark it. They set it apart from the rest with that almost mythical tag: Selección Especial.

It is not a label used lightly. In fact, one must go back to 2001 — one of those vintages that enthusiasts still recall with a sparkle in their eyes — to witness the debut of this distinction in Viña Alberdi. More than 20 years had to pass for it to reappear. And that alone speaks volumes.

But there is more.

The 2021 vintage not only revives the "Selección Especial," but also enters the market as a Reserva, something unprecedented for this wine, which is usually sold as a crianza. Confusing? A bit. Interesting? Very much so. Because, beyond the categories, what is happening here is that Viña Alberdi is ascending to a higher echelon.

And it does so without losing its essence.

Because if anything defines this house — founded in 1890 in the heart of Rioja — it is its fidelity to a style. A style that does not heed trends and is characterised by its elegance, balance, and ageing potential. Vineyards located in Rodezno and Labastida, at altitudes of approximately 500-600 metres, with clay-limestone soils and vines over 40 years old. 

In the winery, the process remains almost ritualistic. Manual harvest, double selection — in the field and on an optical sorting table — and natural fermentations. Then, the ageing for 24 months in American oak barrels, crafted by the winery itself. First new, then more used. And in between, one of those gestures rarely seen anymore: traditional rackings, performed by hand. No rush, no aggressive filtration, allowing the wine to refine itself.

All this results in a Viña Alberdi that is recognisable… yet goes a step further. More intense, more profound, more persistent. A wine that maintains the drinkability that made it famous, but with an extra layer of complexity that elevates it.

In summary: no, not all "specials" are the same. And this one, certainly, is not just another. It is one of those that appear when everything aligns — the vineyard, the climate, the timing, and the decisions — and when they return, they remind us why it is worth the wait.

2020

Viña Alberdi 2020 exhibits a deep garnet hue with a ruby rim. On the nose, it is notable for its high intensity, where red fruits such as raspberries, wild strawberries, and currants intertwine with balsamic aromas of caramel, vanilla, toffee, and roasted coffee. On the palate, it is balanced and fresh, with a long finish and fine, silky tannins. The aftertaste is persistent, returning to the balsamic notes and fresh red fruit that characterize Viña Alberdi.
2019

Viña Alberdi 2019 is a concentrated red wine, deep in color, with an intense garnet hue and cherry tones on the edge. On the nose, it is powerful, carrying a load of ripe fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries), and spices (vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg). On the palate, it's round and balanced, with great freshness. Sweet tannins. Long and balsamic finish.
2016

Viña Alberdi 2016 is a quintessential red wine. The bouquet reveals scents of ripe fruit, sweet spices, and oak. On the palate, it is velvety and well-balanced, exhibiting a prolonged finish with lingering notes of mature fruit and a spicy undertone.
2015

Viña Alberdi 2015 is an elegant red wine, boasting luscious red fruit aromas, sweet spicy undertones, and hints of oak. On the palate, it is flavorful, vibrant, and well-balanced. This wine features approachable tannins and seamlessly integrated acidity. The finish is harmonious and exceedingly pleasing.

 
2013 Viña Alberdi 2013 is a deep, rounded red wine with the personality that the Crianza wines from Rioja must have. In this vintage the aromas of ripe red fruit stand out, with the marked toasted and spicy notes of the aging process. On the palate it is sincere and very pleasant, with a lingering and persistent finish.
2012 Viña Alberdi 2012 is a reference within the classic Rioja Crianza wines. A 100% Tempranillo that absorbs the aromas of its two-year ageing process and its respective racking. A red wine concentrated in the delicacy given by the beautiful oxidation of the passage of the years. An essential.
2008

On the palate, this wine is balanced and silky wine. It shows a pleasant acidity with soft round tannins. There are notes of strawberry jam, cocoa and vanilla.



Cherry coloured with an orange rim. Clear and bright.

To this nose, this wine is intense, with a great prominence of ripe fruit and a background of notes from barrel aging, including cocoa, vanilla, caramel and smoky flavours.
2007 In the mouth, the same sensations found in the nose are repeated. It shows a great structure, it is balanced and silky, with a pleasant final acidity which invites to drink more.

Beautiful cherry red colour with rosy edge. Medium-high robe. Clean and bright.

Intense aroma, with predominance of notes of ripe red fruit in a balsamic, spiced and toasted background.

2005

Well balanced, soft and light wine with a silky mid palate, with soft and silky tannins. Good acidity and a right finish not too much persistant.

A friendly, easy-drinking wine.



Bright cherry red colour tile red edges and with a medium robe.

Fresh aromas. The spicy and balsamic notes are released along with a touch of leather, chocolate and tobacco. Some notes of ripe red fruit are also felt on a background of toasted aromas. The fruit is subtly felt and stays in the background.
2003

Good structure on the palate, balanced with refined tannins, silky, with a vibrant and lively acidity final. Long aftertaste, mature, very elegant, typical of La Rioja Alta.
