About Vigneti Massa Piccolo Derthona

A white grape variety historically grown in the Piemonte wine region of Italy, Timorasso’s popularity declined in the 20th century due to being difficult to cultivate and a preference for more manageable varieties like the high-yielding Barbera. It was Walter Massa who, tired of just selling barrel red wine, decided to save the Timorasso grape from extinction, trusting in its potential to produce high quality wines. As a result, he created wines with structure, complexity and aging potential, and gained recognition both nationally and internationally. He not only succeeded in rescuing and reviving the variety, but also paved the way for its inclusion in the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) Colli Tortonesi in the Piemonte region.

This work is clear to see in Vigneti Massa Piccolo Derthona, a single-variety wine made with the Timorasso star variety grown on mostly limestone soil lying 300 metres above sea level in the Tortona hills (in Piedmont). He uses organic agriculture and the natural balance of the terroir is maintained at all times. Once in the winery, the selected, destemmed and crushed grapes are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine then remains on the skins for about 60 hours and finally finishes its 6-month cycle in the bottle before being released for sale.

The result is Vigneti Massa Piccolo Derthona. A great discovery that is very pleasant and easy to drink. Made by the great pioneer of the Timorasso vine, this wine is a great ambassador of the Piedmont region.

Vigneti Massa Piccolo Derthona 2022 is an aromatic white wine with fragrances of wild flowers, vegetal notes and hints of orange peel. On the palate it is light, clean and easy to drink. A direct wine that is markedly fresh and with a good savoury touch.
