About Torresilo

Ribera del Duero is a relatively young Denomination of Origin where two contrasting realities have coexisted. On one hand, the region attracted ambitious projects, initiated by investors unfamiliar with the land, who eventually succumbed to their lack of knowledge. On the other hand, we have also witnessed the resilience of lifelong vintners, men and women who chose to stop handing over their finest grapes to cooperatives and started bottling their own landscape. The Aragón family embodies that courage. When trends urged the uprooting of ancient vineyards, Amalio Aragón and his children chose to invest in their ancestors' vines to establish Cillar de Silos in 1994.

From Quintana del Pidio, at the heart of DO Ribera del Duero, Torresilo originates from over a dozen selected small plots that form a mosaic of old vineyards located at an altitude of 850 metres. The tinta del país vines, the area's native variety, range in age from 40 to 100 years, rooted in predominantly sandy soils with clay and silt presence. The altitude and extreme continental climate, marked by harsh winters, hot summers, and moderate rainfall of between 400 and 600 mm annually, create a significant thermal difference between day and night, crucial for maintaining a vibrant acidity and a refined aromatic profile. The yields are very low, barely 2,700 kilograms per hectare, and traditional viticulture is practised in the field with manual harvesting where the clusters are selected one by one.

The production of Torresilo adheres to meticulous and respectful work in the winery to allow the fruit to speak for itself. After manual harvesting and grape selection, the berries are destemmed, separating them from the green part of the cluster to avoid bitter flavours. Next, the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation before entering its ageing phase, where it rests for a period of between 15 and 18 months in French oak barrels.

Torresilo is a complex, profound, and deeply aromatic red wine that takes its name from the ancient medieval tower where the village's reserves were safeguarded. A noble and tense wine with a vibrant identity.

2021

Torresilo 2021 is a wine that captivates you from the outset with its intense cherry-red hue that catches the eye. On the nose, it is a true aromatic display: ripe black fruits such as plums are discernible, accompanied by a hint of nutmeg and liquorice. The nuances of balsamic notes and gentle roasted tones unfold elegantly as the wine aerates in the glass. On the palate, it stands out for its depth and balance. It is silky, full-bodied, offering well-integrated minerality and an acidity that makes it exceptionally long-lasting and persistent. Recommended for its elegance and complexity, it is a wine that invites you to explore each of its nuances with every sip.
