About Suertes de Marqués Vidueño

Is it conceivable to intertwine the branches of a centennial vine over several metres, creating a genuine living sculpture upon the volcanic soil?

In the Valle de la Orotava, the vines do not grow upwards; instead, they seem to meander across the earth. Their ancient arms interlace, forming the distinctive cordón trenzado, a technique inherited from ancient viticulturists that allowed them to utilise every corner of the land and today preserves the memory of a unique landscape. Here, where phylloxera never arrived and the roots remain on their own rootstock, Suertes del Marqués revives an understanding of viticulture based on respect, patience, and a connection with the land.

From the north of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), Jonatan García Lima and his team strive to express the most authentic essence of this Atlantic landscape. Suertes del Marqués Vidueño is born from two vineyards located in the heart of the Valle de la Orotava, where more than 20 indigenous varieties are cultivated and crafted together, creating a mosaic of grapes that preserves the identity of the island. Amidst volcanic soils, slopes, and the constant influence of the winds, these vines convey the character of a unique place.

The winemaking process aims to preserve the vineyard's distinct voice, allowing the fruit and time to follow their own rhythm. After a manual harvest and careful selection of the clusters, the wine ferments naturally with its own yeasts in open plastic vats, with 100% whole clusters, and rests for several months in 500-litre barrels to maintain its purity, depth, and mineral character intact. The result is a red wine with an Atlantic soul, where volcanic energy meets an elegant, fresh expression full of nuances.

Suertes del Marqués Vidueño is a wine for those who relish discovering landscapes unlike any other. A bottle that invites one to travel to Tenerife, listen to the wind among the vines, and let each glass reveal a small part of the island's story.
