About Quinta do Noval Touriga Nacional

If Portugal is known for anything—speaking in oenological terms—it is undoubtedly for its fantastic ports. However, this is changing and, although no one will dethrone these fortified wines, other table wines, much lighter, are beginning to gain recognition worldwide.

Among these wines is Quinta do Noval Touriga Nacional, a refined red crafted by the winery Quinta do Noval in the heart of the D.O.C. Douro, in northern Portugal.

In particular, the quality of the whites and reds (mostly) from this region is being highly praised. Although it has taken time for Portuguese vintners—who traditionally sold the grapes after cultivating them—to be convinced, there is life beyond ports. The change in mindset finally occurred, and some small quintas (the term used in Portugal for the land where the vineyard is cultivated) are encouraged to start their own productions. Consequently, wines like Quinta do Noval Touriga Nacional, which were made with the leftover grapes after producing ports, are taking the spotlight and are no longer relegated to the background.

Evidently, and as it could not be otherwise, the quest for excellence begins in the vineyard itself, with vines exclusive to table wines. In the case of Quinta do Noval Touriga Nacional, the grapes come directly from the 145 hectares of the Quinta do Noval vineyard, situated in the heart of the Douro Valley. These grapes are vinified for 10 days in stainless steel tanks, where their acidity is also rounded off with malolactic fermentation.

Finally, 10 months in French oak barrels will complete the character of Quinta do Noval Touriga Nacional: a fine wine that stands out and showcases the often-overlooked Portuguese virtues.

On the palate it is pleasant and well balanced, with soft and integrated tannins, notes of minerals, spices, violets, cherry and dark chocolate on the finish.
