About Pheasant's Tears Tsiska
The tale of John and Gela epitomises how wine and art can bridge the gap between individuals from disparate cultures and backgrounds, and illustrates how the fusion of two passions can spawn enriching experiences and imaginative collaborations. It all commenced when John Wurdeman, an American painter adept at capturing the quintessence and splendour of Georgian culture, landscape and viticulture, began to depict on his canvas the vineyards tended by Gela Patalishvili, a Georgian viticulturist with a family wine-making tradition spanning eight generations. The encounter proved so fruitful that, as their relationship developed, they jointly embarked on their own viticultural venture under the moniker Pheasant's Tears. This winery is committed to indigenous grape varieties and age-old vinification techniques to showcase the country's enviable wine heritage to the globe.
Their wine Pheasant's Tears Tsiska is an orange wine crafted from the native tsiska grape, sourced from ancient vines rooted in clay-loam soil. The vineyards are managed organically, the vines are tended by hand, and the grapes are harvested manually at the crack of dawn. In the winery, after careful selection and destemming of the finest grapes, a three-week maceration process begins, followed by alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts in qvevri (a traditional Georgian earthenware vessel buried underground). Subsequently, the wine is aged in these same vessels for 10 months and is then bottled unclarified, unfiltered, with a mere addition of 2 mg of sulphur.
As a result of reviving ancient qvevri and old-world winemaking methods, Pheasant's Tears Tsiska is an exceptionally unique orange wine. It stands as a bold testament to the success of delving into ancestral traditions as a veritable form of art.
| 2021 | Pheasant's Tears Tsiska 2021 is a sophisticated orange wine boasting a bouquet of ripe stone fruit, hints of white florals, and nuances of dried fruit. On the palate, it reveals a profound depth, vivacious freshness, and a distinct minerality. This wine possesses a textured granularity, marked acidity, and a fruity finish laced with a subtle bitterness. |
