About Nicolau de Almeida Ronfe 2023

If there is someone who has masterfully narrated the story of the Douro in every glass, it is João Nicolau de Almeida. Not only did he elevate the name of Oporto wine to new heights, but he also revolutionised viticulture in the Douro region. How did he achieve this? He started from the top, quite literally: introducing plantations in the elevated areas of the valley, incorporating mechanisation systems, irrigation, and an in-depth study of local grape varieties. But also from the depths: the soul of the schist subsoil that defines each sip of his wines.

Today, the legacy continues with his sons, Mateus and João, who keep this family heritage alive. Every year, they present us with wines that are pure expressions of the Douro terroir. As João himself says: “We work on rocks over 500 million years old that store winter water to nourish the vines in summer.” Poetic? Yes. Real? Indeed.

One of the latest treasures from this family is Nicolau de Almeida Ronfe. A white wine crafted from the indigenous trajadura variety, cultivated with respect, hand-harvested, and handled with almost artisanal care. To begin with, fermentation takes place in 600-litre barrels and cement vats, and then the wine ages on fine lees with batonnage over 4 months. This process results in a wine with body, freshness, and a minerality that transports you directly to the terraces of the Douro.

The Nicolau de Almeida family has understood that, to look to the future, one must first learn to listen to the land. And that is precisely what Nicolau de Almeida Ronfe conveys: the ancient language of the Douro, profound, mineral, and full of life.
