About Meandro do Vale Meão Blanco

For years, saying "Portuguese wine" was synonymous with Port. Sweet, robust, classic... Everything else remained in the shadows. Until a group of young winemakers decided they had had enough of living under that eclipse. Thus, the "Douro Boys" were born, a band of nonconformists who revolutionised the Portuguese wine scene. Among them, names that are now globally renowned: Dirk Niepoort, Cristiano Van Zeller (Quinta Vale Dona Maria), Francisco Ferreira, Miguel Roquette (Quinta do Crasto), and Francisco Olazábal (Quinta do Vale Meão).

The latter, Francisco Olazábal Nicolau de Almeida, epitomises the essence of this movement like few others: tradition, expertise, and an insatiable curiosity to explore the boundaries of what is possible in the Douro. His winery, Quinta do Vale Meão, exemplifies what happens when passion is intertwined with a landscape as challenging as it is beautiful.

And the Douro region does not make it easy for anyone. It is an extreme landscape, east of Porto, where vineyards grow on slopes that seem straight out of a climbing film. Here, cultivating the vine is almost an extreme sport. But that harshness is part of the allure: granite, schist, and alluvial soils that give rise to wines with vigour, texture, and an unmistakable personality.

In this setting, Meandro do Vale Meão Branco is born, one of those gems that encapsulates the new generation of the Douro. Its story begins with a gentle crushing of the indigenous grapes rabigato and arinto, a slow cooling, and traditional pressing in a vertical press. Then, the must rests in small temperature-controlled vats, with each variety fermenting separately, respecting its unique character. Finally, the ageing takes place over 7 months on lees in stainless steel, imparting a creamy texture and vibrant freshness.

The result is a white wine with the soul of a river and the body of a mountain: fresh, full-bodied, and delightfully easy to drink. Meandro do Vale Meão is proof that the Douro no longer lives in the shadow of Porto. It is a different story—more youthful, more liberated, more authentic.
