About Mater-Dôme Blanco

There was a time when the wines from Mêda (Portugal) shone brightly on the tables of Oporto. Today, from that lofty and forgotten corner of the Douro Superior, a white wine re-emerges, seemingly whispering ancient tales with every glass. Mater-Dôme Blanco not only revives an almost lost terroir but reinterprets it with an elegant and contemporary language.

Behind this renaissance are Mateus Nicolau de Almeida and Teresa Ameztoy, a couple who blend wine-making lineages from Portugal and La Rioja. For over two decades, they have been exploring the possibilities of the Douro with an unconventional approach, vinifying by soil type, seeking the most honest expression of the landscape. Their obsession with the rabigato variety, which they regard as their “Burgundian Chardonnay of the Douro”, has given rise to a range of captivating wines, where tradition, intuition, and precision are intertwined.

Mater-Dôme Blanco is born in vineyards situated at an altitude of 600 metres, where the transitional soils between schist and granite, along with a cooler and more humid climate, allow for slow and balanced ripening. The blend of rabigato, síria, gouveio, and viosinho is partially fermented in 700-litre barrels and aged in cement tanks, revealing a wine with an austere and sophisticated profile. A white wine that offers pure balance on the palate: silky volume, integrated freshness, and a long, precise finish.

Mater-Dôme Blanco is a wine that invites one to pause. Ideal for pairing with delicate dishes such as baked white fish, creamy rice dishes, or soft cheeses. Yet it is also a glass to open when the day deserves to be celebrated with tranquillity, admiring how history, the land, and craftsmanship can be encapsulated in just 4,000 bottles.

2023

Mater-Dôme Blanco 2023 is a wine that opens with the freshness of a dawn in the mountains: bright citrus, juicy white fruit, and a delicate whisper of lemongrass. On the palate, it unfolds a silky, almost mineral texture that embraces a finely tuned acidity like a precise stroke. It does not seek to dazzle with gimmicks, but rather to seduce with serenity and depth. Its finish is long, sober, and elegant, like a conversation that lingers in memory. A wine that embodies altitude and restraint.
