About Luis Cañas Finca El Palacio

In Renaissance and Baroque painting, palaces were emblems of power, opulence, and authority. Structures such as the Palace of Versailles or Buckingham Palace have inspired not only canvases but also historical films that transport us to eras of magnificence and splendour.

Today, this concept of a palace is translated into the world of wine. We find ourselves at the Mirador de Luis Cañas, surrounded by the estate that lends its name to their signature wine, Finca El Palacio. This family-owned winery, located in Villabuena de Álava, at the heart of Rioja Alavesa, has seamlessly blended tradition and modernity since 1928, conveying the terroir's character in every bottle.

What makes this vineyard unique is its size and age: two hectares with 60 years of history, a gem of the region. It is planted on clay-limestone soils, with a gentle slope that imparts character to the wine. The biodiversity in the vineyard—herbs, life at the roots, and local fauna—helps the soil breathe and water to permeate, crafting wines with depth and complexity.

Luis Cañas Finca El Palacio is a single-vineyard wine that embodies all this in its blend. Here, it is not the winemaker who determines the proportions, but the vineyard itself. Planted in 1969, the vines dictate the blend: tempranillo, graciano, and viura. The grapes are hand-harvested, meticulously selected cluster by cluster, and co-fermented in a French oak vat. The malolactic fermentation occurs in 500-litre barrels, where they rest for 15 months before becoming a wine that captures the essence of every corner of the plot.

Just as the palaces in art reflected power, history, and beauty, El Palacio of Luis Cañas reveals in each glass the grandeur of Rioja Alavesa: tradition, care, and character that are felt, savoured... and remembered.
