About Lady of the Sunshine Chevey

The finest decisions often stem from simple observation. During her time in Napa, Gina Hildebrand closely observed how grapes were pampered with meticulous care in the vineyard, yet were harvested at extreme ripeness, subjected to excessive extractions in the winery, and constantly manipulated to try and restore lost balance. Convinced that the true character of wine originates in the plant itself, she decided to put her theories into practice and establish her personal project. Today, she shares her life and winemaking space in San Luis Obispo with her partner, Mikey Giugni, founder of Scar of the Sea. Together, they produce their respective wines focused on vineyard expression under one roof, driven by a shared vision that has reached its most exciting moment with the acquisition of the historic Bassi Vineyard on the San Luis Obispo coast. Lady of the Sunshine Chevey is the direct result of this quest for purity and honesty.

From the promising region of San Luis Obispo Coast, on the central coast of California, Lady of the Sunshine Chevey reflects the identity of precision viticulture situated very close to the Pacific Ocean. The grapes come from selected plots where the vines grow exposed to the constant sea breeze and morning mists. The soil is primarily composed of calcareous sandstones and marine-origin schists, poor terrains that compel the roots to delve deep in search of nutrients, imparting a marked mineral freshness to the clusters. The climate is decidedly cool, characterized by a slow maturation that preserves natural acidity without the need to reach high alcohol levels. The varieties chardonnay and sauvignon blanc are cultivated under the principles of biodynamic and organic agriculture, prioritizing the health of the ecosystem with very careful manual harvesting.

For the production of Lady of the Sunshine Chevey, the winery opts for minimal intervention and a profoundly procedural approach. The chardonnay and sauvignon blanc grapes are hand-harvested at the optimal point of tension and freshness. Once in the winery, they are directly pressed with whole clusters, utilizing the stems, the green structure of the plant, to impart texture and vibrant acidity. The alcoholic fermentation is spontaneously initiated with indigenous yeasts in used French oak barrels and neutral tanks. The wine naturally undergoes malolactic fermentation and rests on its fine lees for 7 months before being bottled without aggressive clarification or filtration.

Lady of the Sunshine Chevey is a vibrant, energetic, and profoundly honest wine, where aromas of fresh citrus, white fruit, and saline nuances intertwine seamlessly. A creation that demonstrates when the rhythm of nature is respected, no artifices are needed in the winery.
