About Kumeu River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay

Kumeu River Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay is a single-variety Chardonnay white wine produced by the Kumeu River winery in the Hawke’s Bay denomination in New Zealand.

To make the Kumeu River Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay wine, the harvest is carried out manually. When the clusters reach the winery, they are pressed whole and fermentation takes place in barrels with native yeasts. 100% of the resulting wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and then ages in barrels for around 11 months, depending on the vintage.

Maté Brajkovich bought a vineyard in 1944, but he didn’t return to work his land and replant the vines until 1990. The family winemaking business has grown in line with the growth of viticulture in New Zealand and today the Kumeu River winery has 30 hectares of vineyards with predominantly clay soils on a sandstone base. All the grapes are harvested by hand to make wines with the highest quality, carefully selected raw materials.

The Maté vineyard wines have more reserved characteristics. When they are young, they are aromatically restrained but also concentrated on the palate. They are perfectly balanced like this Kumeu River Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay.

On the nose, it boasts a complex bouquet, with a spectrum of fruit aromas ranging from lemon and grapefruit to white peach. Subtly layered beneath are scents of hazelnut, mocha, and kaffir lime. On the palate, it is rich and fortified, with a medium body and a pronounced flavor profile. It features vibrant and zesty citrus notes. Harmoniously balanced. Profoundly intense and robust.

2016 Kumeu River Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay is a white wine with aromas of grapefruit, fresh pineapple, white peaches and tangerines on the nose, accompanied by smoked and toasted notes from its aging. On the palate it is creamy and concentrated but with an elegant balance of acidity and freshness.
