About Justinos Medium Rich 5 Years

Justinos Medium Rich 5 Years is a fortified wine made by Justinos Madeira in the DOP Madeira with the Tinta Negra variety.

The Justinos Madeira winery was set up in 1870 by Justino Henrique Freitas on the island of Madeira. It is currently one of the oldest wine producing and exporting companies on the island and has one of the largest stocks of aged Madeira wine.

Justinos Medium Rich 5 Years comes from vineyards planted on volcanic soils with basalt, traces, tuff, slag and agglomerates. They use conventional agriculture and no machinery. The vines are trained using the Latada system that forms horizontal wire structures supported by wooden or iron posts. The harvest is carried out manually over several weeks depending on how ripe the grapes are, and the grapes are selected by quality.

Once the grapes have been completely destemmed, Justinos Medium Rich 5 Years macerates with its skins and begins fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature and with reassembly. Fermentation is stopped after 4 or 5 days by adding 96% grape spirit. It is then put into stainless steel tanks for 3 months, with a controlled temperature (45 to 50°C) and reassembly. Finally, the wines are aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 5 years.
