About Iria Otero Ravia Ribeiro

At not even 18 years old, you are already expected to decide what to study and, supposedly, which professional path you will follow. But at that age... who truly knows anything! Most people end up doing something entirely different from what they envisioned. Life has its own timeline, and it is experiences that truly teach you who you are and what you want.

This is what happened to Iria Otero. A Pharmacy student, she spent some time harvesting in the Ribeiro region and there she discovered her true calling. Among terraces and hills, witnessing how grapes were handpicked and how the land bore fruit, she realised that her place was among vineyards, grapes, and barrels, not among books and laboratories. 

That is why, following this experience, she decided to study oenology in La Rioja and has since dedicated the last 17 years to perfecting her craft. To achieve this, she worked in wineries in Rías Baixas and Ribeira Sacra, learning from each fermentation, each ageing process, and every detail of winemaking. In 2015, she launched her own project, beginning by purchasing grapes and making wine in a friend's winery with a clear philosophy of respecting the grape and the place where it grows.

A perfect example is her Iria Otero Ravia Ribeiro. The treixadura and torrontés vineyards are situated on terraces in the val do Avia, at altitudes ranging between 80 and 200 metres, on schist, granite, and sabrego soils. The vines, aged between 23 and 65 years, are sustainably and meticulously hand-harvested. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and the ageing lasts 7 months on lees, combining steel and 500-litre French oak barrels. The result is a wine that clearly expresses the land from which it originates and the character of its native varieties, without artifice, allowing the terroir to speak for itself.
