About Gut Oggau Eugenie
There are many wines. However, what truly sets the Austrian winery Gut Oggau apart is its extensive family. A collection of vibrant, precise, and elegant wines that have now become essential references for the wine of Burgenland. At first glance, the most striking feature is their labels: each wine is represented by a specific character, as if each bottle were part of a family saga where every member has their own distinct personality.
Founded in 2007 by Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe, the project was born from a blend of enthusiasm, conviction, and a very clear vision. From the outset, they committed to a demanding biodynamic viticulture, grounded in deep respect for nature and a philosophy that perceives wine as a living expression of the landscape, culture, and tradition.
Within this unique family of wines, Eugenie represents the most modern generation. In a viticultural context marked by climate change and the pursuit of more sustainable agriculture, it symbolizes a clear gaze towards the future. It is crafted from PIWI varieties, a new generation of grapes developed to tackle the current challenges of the vineyard. They originate from crosses between Vitis vinifera and other species of the Vitis genus, notable for their natural resistance to diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. The term PIWI, from the German Pilzwiderstandsfähig, literally means “fungus-resistant,” thus its name conveys all that it entails.
The wine hails from slate and quartz soils located at approximately 250 meters altitude in Burgenland. Harvesting is done manually, and after destemming, the must macerates with its skins for four days. Fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts, and takes place in Austrian oak barrels, where the wine continues to mature for 10 months, gradually refining.
Gut Oggau Eugenie is a fresh wine, brimming with energy and possessing a contemporary personality that perfectly reflects the restless and modern character of Eugenie. A wine that looks to the future while maintaining a profound respect for the land that defines the Gut Oggau project.
