About Gran Caus Xarel·lo Pairal

Xarel·lo Pairal is not merely a white wine; it stands as a testament to Carlos Esteva's passion for the land of Massís del Garraf (Penedès, Catalonia) and his dedication to unearthing the unseen essence that emanates from each vineyard. Born from xarel·lo vines over 70 years old, this wine is the ultimate expression of the winemaking tradition in Penedès. With every sip, one can sense the imprint of time, the connection to the sea and the wind, and the passion of a man who strove to encapsulate in his wines the very essence of nature.
 
In its crafting, Carlos Esteva employed the most traditional practices to achieve a xarel·lo of character. With grapes sourced from the El Cirerer plot, a vineyard spanning 1.40 hectares situated at an altitude of 260 metres and bathed in southwestern exposure, where the soils contain remnants of marine fossils, this wine has been meticulously crafted. The spontaneous fermentation in chestnut barrels and its maturation for 6 months in the same barrels, followed by an additional 2 years in bottle, have allowed Xarel·lo Pairal to reach perfect maturity, with a complexity that is profoundly felt.
 
Each sip is a journey of flavour and emotion through the history of Garraf, an echo of the land where its vines grow, a testament to the great potential and elegance of the indigenous xarel·lo variety, and a reminder of Carlos's commitment to authenticity. Its passage through the chestnut, an ancient tree that fuses with the earth, imparts a special softness, with subtle hints reminiscent of the calcareous soil's minerality and the freshness of the Mediterranean breeze.
 
Very few bottles of this wine are produced, and like Carlos Esteva himself, it is not for everyone. It is for those who seek a unique experience, who value the connection between the land, time, and the people who inhabit it. A white wine that, like the whisper of the wind among the vineyards of Massís, lingers in the memory, leaving an indelible mark.

2009 Opening is potent and embracing. Passing is silky and unctuous with intense sensations of white fruit and mineral memories. Very good acidity. Long balsamic finish.
