About Forlong Assemblage

Cádiz has historically been a land dominated by fortified wines, where the veil of flor and soleras set the standard. However, two daring young individuals saw beyond tradition and turned their attention to the true queen of southern viticulture: albariza. Rocío Áspera and Alejandro Narváez firmly believed in the hidden potential of this dazzling white soil to produce artisanal reds brimming with life and character. On their estate in El Puerto de Santa María, named For Long in honour of a former British owner, they established a garage project guided by biodynamics and absolute respect for the environment.

From El Puerto de Santa María, in the province of Cádiz, Forlong Assemblage originates from the coveted Pago Balbaína Baja. The vines of merlot and tintilla de rota thrive on albariza soils, that emblematic land rich in calcium carbonate which acts as a natural sponge, absorbing winter rainwater to nourish the plant during the hotter months. The climate is thoroughly Mediterranean with a strong Atlantic influence, characterised by sea breezes that cool the nights and temper the Andalusian sunshine. Following an ecological and biodynamic cultivation philosophy, biodiversity is encouraged in the vineyard and the plant is treated with respect, executing a manual harvest with a rigorous initial selection of the clusters on the vine itself.

The production of Forlong Assemblage is an artisanal process focused on preserving the fruit's authenticity. Once the grapes are hand-picked, they pass through a selection table, are destemmed, separating the berries from the stalk or green structure of the cluster, and are placed in clay amphorae. In these traditional vessels, a cold pre-fermentation maceration occurs before the indigenous yeasts initiate alcoholic fermentation. Throughout this period, manual punch-downs are applied, gently submerging the cap of grape skins to extract colour and aromas. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is separated from the skins and rests in the clay amphorae for 6 months undergoing malolactic fermentation. Finally, it is transferred to French oak barrels to undergo 12 months of ageing on fine lees with bâtonnage, the periodic stirring of the inactive yeasts to impart creaminess and volume.

Forlong Assemblage is a complex, juicy, and profoundly expressive red, where fresh fruit, saline nuances, and the chalky imprint of albariza blend into an unforgettable sapid elegance. For without albariza, there would be no Forlong, and without Forlong, the wine world would be less vibrant.
