About El Grifo Reserva de Familia

25 years ago, the Otamendi Rodríguez-Bethencourt family planted syrah grapevines on volcanic ash. This variety, which complemented the native listán negro, demonstrated excellent results, and this family vineyard has now become an essential plot within the El Grifo winery. Thus, El Grifo Reserva de Familia was born, a "hypnotic" red wine that will linger in your mind.
 
The key aspect that makes El Grifo Reserva de Familia so special is the ageing process of this wine, which spends several years in new oak barrels and matures further in the bottle. The first step, of course, is to undertake quality cultivation that is entirely artisanal and environmentally friendly. Once achieved, the harvest takes place in August, where the clusters are handpicked and swiftly transported to the winery, where El Grifo Reserva de Familia is destemmed and fermented with whole berries. In the tanks, fermentation begins, accompanied by a series of continuous pump-overs until finally El Grifo Reserva de Familia is transferred to new French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. Finally, El Grifo Reserva de Familia is bottled and rests for another year in the winery before being labelled.

El Grifo Reserva de Familia 2021 boasts an enticing deep garnet hue. On the nose, it unveils a rich array of aromas, with prominent notes of ripe blackberries and plums, intertwined with subtle hints of vanilla and spices, a result of its barrel ageing. Upon tasting, the syrah reveals its full character with a full-bodied and enveloping texture. The tannins are well-integrated, imparting a sensation of smoothness, while the acidity maintains a persistent freshness. Recommended for those who appreciate robust and complex wines that offer a balance between fruit and oak, leaving a pleasant memory with every sip.
