About Château Ducru-Beaucaillou
In the A.O.C. Saint-Julien, on the left bank of the Garonne —in Bordeaux— there exists a unique global peculiarity: its Gunzian gravel soils. This mixture, composed of Jasper from the Pyrenees, flint, quartz, and agatoids, is exclusive to this area, and it is to this that the vintners owe the abundance of their vineyards. The vintners hold this foundational soil in such high esteem that its official or more scientific name is often replaced by Beaux Cailloux (beautiful pebbles). Undoubtedly, they have much to be thankful for; and we should be equally grateful for the wine Château Ducru-Beaucaillou.
To the west of France, in the Médoc, this red wine is born from a blend of possibly the finest cabernet sauvignon and merlot cultivated in this region. The credit goes to the oenologist Eric Boissenot and the Boire family, the current owners of the domaine, who have managed to maintain the quality that has always characterised this wine. It must be incredibly challenging to take responsibility for 300 years of history and to uphold both the work and the achievements of the various families that have led the production of this red. Be it the Desjean, Bergeron, Ducru, Johnston, Desbarat, or Borie; historically, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou has always been one of the greats. Today, this greatness translates into efforts ranging from the elimination of chemical products in the vineyard to manual labour, vegetative covers, increased aeration (to prevent fungi like botrytis), and mechanical weeding. Likewise, at Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, they have become much more demanding, significantly reducing the yield of their plants; in fact, only those clusters that are perfect, without any defects, are kept. This initial selection begins in the field and concludes in the vat room, where the berries are sorted through optical selection.
After fermentation, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou spends approximately 18 months in French oak barrels until it reaches its full potential. At this point, a Quality Committee of the winery will be responsible for approving the bottling. Until then, there is nothing to be done but to wait patiently for one of the finest wines of France. And believe us, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is worth the wait.
| 2023 | Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2023 is a red wine with a subtly mature character and significant concentration. On the nose, it reveals aromas of black fruits such as blackberries and plums, accompanied by a hint of vanilla and sweet spices due to its barrel aging. On the palate, it is elegant and well-structured, with smooth tannins and a lingering finish that invites you to savour every sip. |
