About Alegre Valgañón Clarete
A century ago, the wine blending white and red grapes was ubiquitous across Spain. It was the everyday drink, refreshing hot days and filling pitchers at village meals with no greater ambition than to bring joy. However, for decades it was scorned as vulgar by the more pretentious sectors of the industry, who sidelined clarete in favour of more solemn creations. The time has come to shake off these prejudices and reclaim this light marvel as the ideal choice for summer and lengthy conversations. For when the heat is on, nothing surpasses the honesty of a fresh, fruity, and uninhibited sip that connects us directly with our roots.
From the northeastern corner of Rioja Alta, the couple of agricultural engineers Óscar Alegre and Eva Valgañón passionately defend this heritage. The project Alegre Valgañón operates on the slopes of the Montes Obarenes, in Rioja Alta, where a cool climate with Atlantic influences prevails. The vines sink their roots into alternating soils of calcareous sandstones, silt, and marl clays, a limestone terrain that imparts vibrant acidity. With an environmentally respectful cultivation and careful manual harvest, this pair demonstrates that village vineyards possess extraordinary quality.
The production of Alegre Valgañón Clarete pays homage to traditional methods through a composition of red garnacha grapes and white viura grapes. In the winery, a three-day maceration occurs, where the destemmed viura must, separated from its stalk, comes into contact with the garnacha processed with its stems, retaining the woody structure of the cluster to add freshness and a herbal touch. After a gentle pressing to achieve a delicate yield of 65% juice, the alcoholic fermentation, the natural process where yeasts transform sugars into alcohol, is divided between stainless steel tanks and 1,000-litre wooden vats. Finally, the wine undergoes a seven-month maturation on its lees in suspension, which are periodically stirred to impart greater volume, creaminess, and silkiness on the palate.
Thus, Alegre Valgañón Clarete is an expressive, sparkling, and energetic clarete that revives the festive spirit of the past with impeccable technical refinement. An honest, brilliant, and gastronomic wine that invites uncomplicated drinking and the enjoyment of outdoor life.
