About Puro Rofe Juan Bello

Lanzarote is an island of volcanic origin boasting over 25 volcanoes. This geographical arrangement imparts a distinctive style to the region's wines. Although these unique characteristics have not been extensively promoted, in recent times, visionary winemakers who understand and cherish the land have managed to unveil its potential. In the case of Rayco Fernández, a wine merchant originally from the Canary Islands, he has boldly embarked on his own project. To achieve this, he surrounds himself with his best contacts, organic viticulturists who are passionate about the vineyard and possess unparalleled knowledge of the volcanic terrain that so defines the Lanzarote area. The island is partially covered with volcanic sand known as rofe (hence the project's name Puro Rofe), which imparts unique characteristics to the vineyard, making Lanzarote a distinctive wine region.

This is how Puro Rofe Juan Bello is introduced to us, a wine originating from a volcano located in the village of Masdache, crafted from the native grape varieties listán blanco, malvasía, and diego. A "vino de paraje" or Cru where vines over 100 years old at 350 metres above sea level survive in small "holes" dug into the volcanic soil to protect them from the Atlantic winds and desert heat. It is organically farmed, and the harvest is conducted manually at the optimal point of ripeness. In the winery, the selected and destemmed grapes are gently pressed to initiate spontaneous fermentation in neutral 500-litre French oak barrels with indigenous yeasts. Afterwards, the wine ages in these same barrels for 8-9 months and is ultimately bottled without fining or filtering.

Puro Rofe Juan Bello 2023 is characterised by its brilliant hue and steely reflections, accompanied by a golden rim that invites indulgence. On the nose, it features canned pineapple, with hints of vanilla and the freshness of apple. On the palate, one detects smoky notes and herbal nuances, all wrapped in an elegant structure and a sparkling effervescence that imparts vibrancy. With only 606 bottles available, this white wine is a unique choice for those who appreciate subtle and aromatic flavours.
