About Opus One

They met while on holiday on the Big Island of Hawaii, specifically at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. One is the owner of Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux. The other is one of the most renowned vintners of the Napa Valley. However, they share one thing in common: they are masters of cabernet sauvignon.

This encounter between Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi marked the beginning of the story of the Opus One winery, a venture where unique, exclusive, and highly sought-after wines are crafted with one fundamental aim: to achieve unparalleled quality. Under this premise, Opus One emerges, a red wine produced in A.V.A. Oakville, within the Napa Valley. Here, Opus One owns 68 hectares in the western part of the appellation, organised into four vineyards where cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, malbec, and petit verdot are cultivated.

Here, under the signature and supervision of the oenologist Michael Silacci - who joined the winery in 2001 - manual harvesting is alternated with more modern and mechanical techniques (provided they do not compromise the final outcome). Following this, the Opus One berries are selected using an optical sorter and proceed to ferment separately in stainless steel tanks.

Once the yeast has completed its work, Opus One will undergo a 19-day maceration with the skins, before finally being blended and aged for 19 months in new French oak barrels.
