About Château La Croix Saint Georges
The Crusades, military expeditions undertaken by European Christians between the 11th and 13th centuries with the primary goal of reclaiming the holy sites of Christianity, left a profound impact on Europe and the Middle East. Carried out by Christian orders, these campaigns played various roles, including the protection of pilgrims, medical care, and the defense of Christian territories in the Holy Land. One of the most notable orders was the Hospitallers, represented by Saint George, whose original mission was to provide medical and hospital care to pilgrims in the Holy Land and to participate militarily in the Crusades. Château La Croix Saint Georges, located in an area that belonged to this order in the Middle Ages, proudly showcases this historical connection with a sculpture of Saint George fighting on horseback on its façade. Today, Château La Croix Saint Georges is a splendid winery owned by Bordeaux wine magnate Jean Philippe Janoueix, and in honour of its glorious past, it combines innovation with a profound respect for the winemaking craft.
Its namesake wine, Château La Croix Saint Georges, is a red wine made from the merlot and cabernet franc varieties, sourced from old vines planted on a 4.5-hectare gravel plateau in Pomerol (Bordeaux). This terroir is highly sensitive to water stress due to its natural drainage, which encourages deep rooting of the vines in search of water and freshness. A reasoned and environmentally respectful form of agriculture is practised, and once in the winery, vinification is carried out traditionally in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts at controlled temperatures. Afterwards, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months.
Just as the Hospitallers fiercely defended pilgrims in the Holy Land, within a bottle of Château La Croix Saint Georges lies the best of a unique terroir. A silky, profound, and balanced Pomerol that, due to its excellence, transcends borders.
