About Angelita del Challao

If anyone knows that the world is a small place, it is the Michelini family: quintessential travelling winemakers. Descendants of Italian immigrants, they have turned winemaking into their family legacy. Four of the brothers —Gerardo, Gabriel, Matías, and Juan Pablo— drive their own ventures such as Altar Uco, Passionate Uco, Sitio La Estocada, and Michelini i Mufatto, while also collaborating on the establishment of SuperUco, the winery they share.

However, some were not content with Mendoza, Argentina. Matías Michelini has explored Galicia and Navarra, while Gerardo, alongside his wife Andrea Mufatto, founded a winery in Bierzo in 2015. There, their son Manuel grew up among barrels, vineyards, and travels until his path led him to Labastida, in Rioja Alavesa.
“When I arrived in Labastida, I couldn’t think of anything other than making my wine there. I recognised that place as my place in the world,” Manu confesses. By chance, in 2019 he met Carlos Fernández, a winemaker deeply rooted in the area, and the synergy was immediate. Thus, Dominio del Challao was born, a young, ambitious project deeply connected to its terroir.

Their first introduction is Angelita del Challao, a red wine that reflects the character of its land. It originates from vineyards located in the lowest part of the village, cultivated organically with tempranillo, garnacha, and other white varieties that encapsulate the terroir's personality. Some of the clusters are foot-trodden whole, while the rest are destemmed without pressing. Fermentation takes place in concrete for 10 days, and ageing extends for 21 months in French and Austrian oak barrels of various uses, as well as large-sized foudres, before blending and resting for an additional 10 months in concrete tanks, achieving a wine of balance, freshness, and structure.

In a world where connection is paramount, sometimes it takes just the right thread for paths to cross and something unique to emerge. This is the case with Angelita del Challao, a red from Rioja Alavesa that combines freshness, structure, and character.
