About Ultreia Petra

Ultreia Petra is a red wine from the DO. Bierzo produced by Raúl Pérez. It is a single-varietal wine made from Mencía.

The region boasts an exceptional microclimate for viticulture: mild, rather temperate, with a certain constant humidity. It is a climate similar to that of Galicia in some respects, although it partly exhibits the characteristics of the drier climate of Castilla.

The grapes used for Ultreia Petra come from slate soils located in the area of Valtuille de Abajo. After being harvested, the whole clusters undergo cold maceration. Subsequently, the grapes ferment in oval French oak barrels with a capacity of up to 1,500 litres. In these same vessels, Ultreia Petra rests for twelve months, during which constant punch-downs are carried out to achieve the greatest possible colour extraction.

Raúl Pérez is one of the most renowned winemakers on the Spanish scene. He began his career at the family winery Castro Ventosa, but soon embarked on his own path. One of the most esteemed winemakers by Rober Parker, Raúl collaborates on numerous projects, each more impressive than the last.

2018 Ultreia Petra 2018 is a supple red wine, redolent with the scents of ripe black fruit, underpinned by notes of heather and thyme, and hints of pastry and chocolate. On the palate, it is enveloping, robust, and articulate. A wine characterized by its invigorating acidity and a prolonged, enduring finish.
