About Tilenus Entrecuestas

Celtic mythology is intricate and varies among the different Celtic cultures and regions. These deities, commonly linked with nature, warfare, fertility, and the afterlife, reflect a profound connection with the natural world and the cosmic forces that governed the lives of the Celtic peoples. An example is Teleno, a primordial god embodying power, strength, and protection. His name is associated with a mountain in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, in the region of León (Castilla y León), an emblematic site linked to rituals and cults dedicated to this god, later occupied by the Romans, showcasing the vinicultural splendour characteristic of Bierzo. It is from this influence that Bodegas Estefanía adopted the name Tilenus for its main brand. A project that the Frías family embarked upon in 1999 in an old dairy located in the hamlet of Dehesas, in Ponferrada (León), producing exclusive wines in an artisanal manner.

An example of this work can be found in Tilenus Entrecuestas, a white wine originating from a godello plot situated on a steep slope between 600 and 850 metres of altitude. Vines with a minimum age of 22 years on loam and sandy loam soils with a significant presence of quartzite and pebbles. Traditional cultivation is practised, and the harvest is done manually at the optimal moment of ripeness. Once in the winery, the finest grapes are selected and destemmed, followed by maceration with skins and seeds for 24 hours. Then, it is gently pressed, and the obtained must ferments with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats. Finally, the wine ages on its lees in these same containers for 12 months.

With a limited and numbered production, Tilenus Entrecuestas is presented sealed with wax to enhance its exclusivity. A modern reinterpretation of the natural forces that have shaped the identity of this wine region, taking the heritage of Bierzo to new horizons.
