About Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Garnacha

When Mariano García arrived at the D.O. Toro, there were scarcely any garnacha vineyards left. It was the year 1997 and at that time, as Mariano – who was already leading bodegas Mauro – sought to establish Bodegas y Viñedos San Román (his second venture) in this designation, the vintners were uprooting the vines of this variety, which was traditionally blended with others. In some places, garnacha was even referred to as La Tapada, as the general trend leaned towards concealing it and not having it appear on bottle labels. Fortunately – thank heavens! – the vintners have learned to cultivate this grape and make the most of it, producing excellent single-variety wines that have even prompted some legislative changes. This is the case with the latest amendment in the regulations of the D.O. Toro, where garnacha single-varietals are now protected under the designation (provided that 85% of the wine is made from this variety). The first to respond to this change were Bodegas y Viñedos San Román with their red Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Garnacha.

Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Garnacha has been quite the revelation, as recognised by the Guía Peñín. It is often said that luck is important, but perhaps being in the right place at the right time is even more crucial. Such has been the case with this red wine, which comes to answer and silence the pleas and prayers of garnacha enthusiasts. This would not have been possible without the foresight Mariano had at the time when, instead of following the majority's inertia, he wisely preserved and maintained 2 hectares of garnacha, which have now expanded to 15 hectares (representing 16% of this variety within the entire designation). Currently, the winery boasts a total of 140 hectares spread across San Román de Hornija, Villaester, and Morales de Toro. For Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Garnacha, the grapes are sourced exclusively from Pago de los Almendros, an old vineyard (planted in 1964) covering 1.4 hectares located in the El Monte area (in the municipality of Villaester), at an altitude of 710 metres. In this region, the soils are loose, stony or sandy, with clay subsoils that retain water to provide relief for the vines during hot summers and drought periods (with rainfall between 200 and 400 mm annually). These plots are part of a total of 130 hectares of organic vineyards undergoing full biodynamic conversion.

The harvest of Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Garnacha is conducted manually (following an initial selection of clusters in the vineyard). Once placed in 15-kilogram boxes, the clusters are taken to a cold chamber where they are chilled and prepared for a selection table (where the finest berries are chosen once more). From there, Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Garnacha is transferred by gravity directly into various tanks where the whole clusters begin spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, involving gentle manual punching down of the skins. Little more is done. Finally, Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Garnacha is aged in 500-litre French and American oak barrels (30% of them new) for 20 months, becoming a wine as eagerly awaited as rain in a drought. As described by Javier Luengo (editorial director of Peñín): "a garnacha of high calibre".

2021

Delectable and highly succulent. Few additional adjectives are necessary to encapsulate the tasting note of Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Garnacha 2021. Overall, it is a concentrated red wine, exceedingly palatable, with floral and red fruit aromas emerging. On the palate, it is fresh and mellow, with agile and light tannins that, despite their body, do not weigh heavily. In essence: a truly distinctive red wine.

2019

San Román Garnacha 2019 is a concentrated and powerful red wine. The nose is floral and elegant, with notes of dried grass, creamy oak, raspberry, ripe fruit and balsamic hints. The palate has character, with ripe fruit flavours, spice and hard tannins. It undergoes malolactic fermentation.
