About Château Beychevelle

In the old days, merchant sailing ships had to approach warships to be registered and, to indicate their goodwill and honesty, they lowered sail. It is from this sign of loyalty that Château Beychevelle gets its name. Owned by the first Duke of Épernon, Grand Admiral of France and a favourite of King Henri III, in the early 17th century his power in the region was such that ships passing by the manor lowered their sails as a sign of respect, giving the area the name “Baisse voile” (meaning “Low Sail”), which later became “Beychevelle” and is the current emblem of the Château. Later, during the 18th century, the Baron de Beychevelle created the first Beychevelle wine, but it was thanks to the Achille-Fould family and especially Aymar Achille-Fould that it achieved the prestige that Beychevelle has now. Today, Château Beychevelle is 50% owned by Groupe Castel in partnership with the Japanese group Suntory.

The namesake wine, Château Beychevelle is classified as a “quatrième grand cru” in the 1855 classification, within the AOC Saint-Julien denomination. An excellent wine made from vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot growing on the 90 exceptional hectares of deep gravel in the Garonne. Following a winemaking tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, the grapes are carefully cultivated with respect for the prestige of this Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Julien. In the winery, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks and then the wine is aged for 18 months before being bottled. It is thanks to this careful selection and aging process that the wine reaches perfection.

From the first production and throughout all the different vintages that have been created, Château Beychevelle reflects elegance, delicacy and aromatic and gustatory richness. A gem of the Médoc that showcases the term château in its most noble sense.
