Parents often establish rules and expectations for their children concerning their education and behaviour. This can include the necessity to study, adhere to schedules, or influence their career choices, based on what they deem best for them. Although this may initially provoke resistance, over time, children may come to realise that their parents were right regarding the choice of a career that aligns with their skills and aspirations. This is what happened to Diego Magaña, a rebellious young man, son of winegrowers, who reluctantly began studying at the Escuela de Viña y Vino de Madrid. However, as he started to uncover everything behind the vineyard, the world of wine transformed from a nuisance into his raison d'être. After completing his oenology studies, he furthered his education through various international projects, and once he felt truly prepared, he embarked on his own venture in Bierzo with the assistance of the esteemed Raúl Pérez. Currently, he produces wines in three different denominations of origin: Rioja, Navarra, and Bierzo.
His wine, Diego Magaña Anza CDVIN is a Garnacha from a small plot located in the village of Cordovín (La Rioja Alta) with 98-year-old vines planted on calcareous soil at an altitude of 600 metres. It is traditionally cultivated, and once in the winery, the grapes are selected and destemmed. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts in 1,000-litre stainless steel tanks, and subsequently, the wine ages for 12 months in used 500-litre barrels.
With a very limited production, Diego Magaña Anza CDVIN is a marvellous Garnacha integrated into the DOCa Rioja that showcases all the aptitudes of this new generation winegrower who has become one of the great promises of Spanish oenology.
