About Cune Imperial Gran Reserva

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva is a red wine crafted in the DOCa La Rioja by CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España), a historic winery established in the late 19th century.

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva is regarded by some as one of Spain's finest wines. Its 2014 vintage was chosen by the esteemed magazine Winespectator as the best wine in the world. It is a blend primarily composed of tempranillo grapes, complemented by a small percentage of mazuelo and graciano. The grapes are sourced from 45-year-old vines planted in the village of Villalba. Harvesting is done manually, with an initial selection of bunches, and transported to the winery in small crates to ensure the grapes remain in pristine condition. Once at the winery, the grapes are chilled and placed on a sorting table where only the finest bunches, previously selected in the field, are chosen. The grapes undergo cold maceration before fermenting at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, followed by an extended post-fermentation maceration.

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva undergoes ageing for 22 months in French and American oak barrels, during which it is racked every four months. After the ageing process is complete, it is clarified and bottled, followed by bottle ageing in the winery's cellar to further refine it before release to the market.

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva is a classic wine from La Rioja. It is refined, elegant, balanced, and rounded with exceptional barrel work.
While it is ready for consumption now, it possesses significant ageing potential.

2017

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva 2017 unfurls a nuanced allure with hints of spices and a maturity that gently caresses the senses. On the nose, one discerns the aromas of dark fruits, such as plums and blackberries, interwoven with a subtle hint of vanilla. On the palate, its progression is poised and harmonious, with refined tannins that herald a pleasing development over time. The finish is enduring, leaving an impression of unassuming sophistication.

2009 The year 2009 was distinguished by a notably warm season in Rioja Alta, which culminated in the production of more mature wines. Consequently, this Imperial Gran Reserva is more approachable in its youth. Dark fruit and spices are exquisitely balanced.
2008 Balanced, silky, soft, elegant. Very greedy with hints of liquorice in the aftertaste.

A pretty garnet colour.

The nose is a complex, full of nuances. There are varietal aromas. Ripe forest fruits and liquorice with notes of the barrel: cloves, fruit, leaves and snuff.
2005 Good attack, silky and elegant mid-palate, with a great and well-defined acidity that provides a lot of freshness, many fruit and elegant toasted nuances that are repeated at retro-olfaction. Very long and persistent finish. Great, well-balanced red wine without edges.

Ruby colour with maroon edge. Clean and bright wine of medium robe and a slightly coloured uniform-falling tear.

Complex, clean and intense. Ripe red fruit, fine toasted notes, spices, nails, coffee, liquorice, vanilla, balsamic touches, eucalyptus, rosemary, tobacco, and wet mountain aromas.
2004 The tasting repport of this wine is being translated. Meanwhile, you can check the Spanish version.

1999 Wide, bulky and well-bodied wine, which coats the mouth entirely with its aromas. It has a long, very expressive, velvety mid palate, with a great balance. Excellent acidity and round tannins. Long and very persistent finish.

Nice maroon colour with tile red edges, characteristic of this kind of wines. Bright wine with very elegant tears.

Intense, deep and concentrated aromas, with notes that improve after aeration. Initially, its intense and elegant toasted, smoked and balsamic hints are released. When it opens up, the intense notes of ripe black fruit are displayed, mixed with subtle, creamy spices which reach a perfect balance. Slightly herbal background.
