About Château Branaire-Ducru
He started out in the banking world. Then he got into the sugar business. And finally he ended up in Bordeaux, in the A.O.C. Saint-Julien, where he bought the Château Branaire-Ducru. Together with his wife, he stayed there until the end of his days, drawn in by the world of wine, and became one of the most recognised figures.
It seems that this is the best inheritance Patrick Maroteaux could leave to his family. Now, following his death, this business, founded in the 17th century, continues to operate and produce Château Branaire-Ducru, one of the most representative red wines of the Médoc (in southwest France). There, nestled between Margaux and Pauillac, this wine started life, one of the ten wines of the 1855 Quatrièmes Crus from the Official Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855, which is now enjoying a second wind following its relaunch in 1988, when Maroteaux bought the property from the Tapie family. This was just the beginning of a series of investments and renovations that took Château Branaire-Ducru to the top.
In total, Château Branaire-Ducru has 60 hectares of vineyards, with an average age of 35 years, planted on alluvial soils, rich in silica, which makes it one of the warmest in the region. As a result, the main varieties grown (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot) have no issues reaching optimum ripeness. The grapes are harvested by hand, plot by plot, after an exhaustive selection process where only the healthiest bunches in perfect condition are kept. The Château Branaire-Ducru revolution also happened in the winery, where Maroteaux decided to take on some great people, like Philippe Dhalluin, who became winemaking director. Maroteaux also carried out renovations inside the winery building, becoming the first producer in the region to use gravity vatting, doing away with pumps and mechanical processes.
After vatting, which happens by plot and by variety, Château Branaire-Ducru ferments in tanks under the watchful eye and supervision of the workers. This process, which is followed by maceration, can take up to three weeks. Once finished, the moment of truth arrives when the technical team begin the blending or assemblage, working out what percentage of each variety should be used for that vintage. Finally, Château Branaire-Ducru is transferred to oak barrels (60% of which are new) where it will be aged for a minimum of 18 months. Château Branaire-Ducru is bottled on the property, giving it a sure value that never disappoints.
