Seen as “the most valuable vineyard in all of Germany”, they say that during the Thirty Years’ War the Spanish General Frangipani forced the soldiers to salute in front of the vineyard, as a form of respect for this place. Its sandstone, lime and basalt soils saw it placed the highest possible category in the Kingdom of Bavaria classification in 1828. Von Winning Kirchenstück GG Riesling is produced by Von Winning, one of the oldest wineries in Germany. The origin dates back to the 18th century, specifically to 1794 with the establishment of Deinhard & Co, a wine wholesale business run by the family of the same name. Soon the heirs of this business realised the benefits of the area, where the vineyards grew with very specific characteristics: sandstone, lime and basalt soils that perfectly retain the heat of the more than 1,800 hours of sunshine a year. This region is one of the warmest in Germany and is home to different varieties, including Riesling, which grows in high planting densities (with few but high quality grapes). Only in this way, and with some competition, can the vines strive to be their best.

Following a completely environmentally friendly cultivation, and with a manual harvest, the Von Winning Kirchenstück GG Riesling grapes are taken to the winery where they ferment in 500-litre oak barrels. This step is a hallmark of this particular winery, where wood continues to be used during aging, with aging on lees for approximately two years. Sheer might and grandeur!
