About Spioenkop 1900 Pinotage

In 1899, the British Empire, attracted by the diamonds in the northeast of present-day South Africa, invaded the area and confronted the Dutch settlers. This is how the second Boer (Dutch for “settler”) war began. Of all the battles that took place, one of the most famous was Spioenkop (Spy Hill). A bloody confrontation between the two sides that lasted two days, on 23 and 24 January 1900, remembered as one of the greatest colonial victories as they defeated the British soldiers against all odds. A victory that, although short-lived, became legendary. Taking this empowering spirit of the area, Belgian couple Koen and Lore Roose settled in the Elgin Valley area (Western Cape South Coast) using the name of this very famous hill and began making wines that are faithful to the South African terroir using a very European vision.

One result of this commitment to the area is Spioenkop 1900 Pinotage. A wine made from the native South African Pinotage variety. This is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault that is planted in clay and schist soils. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and all work uses artisan methods. In the winery, the grapes are destemmed and left to cold macerate with the skins. Then a spontaneous fermentation begins with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Finally the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 11 months on its lees without racking and is bottled without clarifying or filtering.

Spioenkop 1900 Pinotage is made as a tribute to the year of this famous battle. An ode to defending the land that the Belgian couple have managed to convey so well. An empowering wine!
