About Rico - Nuevo Barrera del Sol

Rico-Nuevo Barrera del Sol is a barrel-aged red wine made by the Rico-Nuevo Viticultores winery with the Garnacha Tinta variety in the D.O. Cebreros (Castilla y León).

Rico-Nuevo Viticultores is a fairly new project set up by Juan Andrés Martín Pérez, Juanan in the town of Burgohondo (Ávila). This project brings together all the wine-growing wisdom passed down through his family for four generations, which Juanan now tries to reflect in each of his wines. The name of the winery is a tribute to his great-grandfather, a great vine grower and winemaker in the town who was nicknamed Rico Nuevo.

Rico-Nuevo Barrera del Sol comes from a unique place called “El Zaudejo”. It is made with old Garnacha TInta vines, growing in a markedly continental climate and planted in poor and shallow granite sand soils. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

When the Rico-Nuevo Barrera del Sol grapes reach the winery, they are gently crushed to begin maceration and spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. The wine is then aged in 400L French oak barrels and 1200L eggs for 6 months. Finally the wine is bottled without filtering or clarifying, so it may contain sediment.

Rico-Nuevo Barrera del Sol is an honest and pure red wine that just seeks to reignite a pride in the village identity. A very powerful Gredos expression.

2019 Rico-Nuevo Barrera del Sol 2019 is a juicy red wine with aromas of fresh red fruit and spicy notes. On the palate it is round, powerful and fruity, with marked tannins and a mineral finish.
2018

Rico-Nuevo Barrera del Sol 2018 is a succulent red wine redolent with scents of cherries, currants, and licorice, enhanced by hints of cocoa. On the palate, it is well-rounded, robust, and exhibits a mineral character. This wine features pronounced tannins, a zesty acidity, and a prolonged, lingering finish.
