About Nicolas Chemarin Morgon Les Charmes
An increasing number of initiatives are sprouting up in defense of ancient vineyards. They embody tradition, agriculture, and rural life, offering hope to small villages. In the case of Nicolas Chemarin, a burgeoning vintner from Beaujolais (France), he has hit the nail on the head by staying in Marchampt, a secluded hamlet nestled in the wooded hills of western Beaujolais where he is the sole male of his generation to remain with the aim of reviving old, semi-abandoned plots. With 5 hectares of family-owned land, he cultivates according to biodynamic principles and vinifies with respect to produce wines brimming with fruitiness and minerality, and with a surprisingly profound depth for a Beaujolais.
This is evident in Nicolas Chemarin Morgon Les Charmes. A red wine from gamay belonging to the AOC Morgon (Beaujolais). Old vines planted in pink sandy soil on the surface and slate at the depth, that are farmed following biodynamic practices. Once the grapes are hand-harvested, they are selected, destemmed, and vinified with carbonic maceration for about 30 days without the addition of SO2 or any oenological additives. The aging process is carried out with 50% in oak barrels that have seen 4 to 10 vintages and the remaining 50% in vats for 10 months. Finally, it is bottled unclarified and unfiltered.
A man connected to his land, Nicolas knows how to extract the best from the soils, altitude, and aspects of the inherited vineyards. All the perfect ingredients to create wonders like this Nicolas Chemarin Morgon Les Charmes. A Beaujolais with a concentration and depth that are extraordinary.
