About Main Divide Chardonnay
Main Divide is an organic, barrel-aged white wine made in Canterbury (New Zealand) by Main Divide using the Chardonnay variety.
Using the experience he gained in different wineries across the old and new world, Mattew Donaldson now leads his own project in the town of Waipara, in Canterbury. The name Main Divide is taken from the so-called Southern Alps, on New Zealand’s South Island, and this is a wine that seeks the purest expression of the different soils.
Main Divide Chardonnay comes from selected vineyards in North Canterbury, on the South Island of New Zealand. These vines are planted in clayey and stony soils, which allow good drainage. Likewise, the ocean breeze provides a cool climate throughout the year. They use ecological agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually.
In the winery, Main Divide Chardonnay first goes through a soft pressing and the resulting must is transferred to 500-litre barrels, 10% of which are new, to begin fermentation with native yeasts. It stays there for 12 months on its lees.
With Main Divide Chardonnay the Donaldson family are looking to showcase the qualities of the Chardonnay variety from the banks of the Waipara River. The result is a complex, aromatic and very mineral white wine.

2015 | Main Divide Chardonnay 2015 is a creamy white wine with intense citrus fragrances and tropical fruits combined with hints of yeast and spices. On the palate it is an unctuous, enveloping and very mineral wine. The mid-palate reveals notes of concentrated fruit, with a fresh acidity and a long and somewhat bitter finish. |
