About Lajibe Marcel
Fencing is a combat sport involving the use of swords, originating in Europe in the 15th century and has been an Olympic sport since the inaugural modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. While fencing and wine may seem disparate, they have historically shared a connection. This is particularly true in certain European wine-producing regions such as France and Italy, where wine has traditionally been ingrained in the culture and social life of fencers, and it is commonplace for athletes to celebrate with wine after competitions or training sessions. One such professional athlete who played and represented France on the national fencing team was Jean-Baptiste Semmartin. In his case, the connection to wine is particularly profound. He has since dedicated himself to crafting natural wines in Jurançon (Aquitaine). To this end, he seeks out vines that inspire him on the edge of the Pyrenees and draws from diverse experiences before establishing his own Domaine Lajibe, with the invaluable assistance of the Estoueigt family (Domaine Larroudé). Most notably, he takes inspiration from Emmanuel Giboulout in Burgundy, one of the biodynamic pioneers in the region. Currently, with his partner Juliana, they have crafted their own style of dense, intense, and energetically vibrant white wines.
From a superb terroir in Lucq de Béarn, located in the municipality of Monein (Jurançon) with clay and detrital rock soils at an elevation of 350 meters above sea level, he embodies his approach with two grape varieties; petit manseng and gros manseng in his wine Lajibe Marcel. This unique place is characterized by polyculture, where holm oaks, fruit trees, and animals coexist, and where biodynamic principles are applied. In a region abundant with water and rainfall, where all vineyard practices are organic and sustainable, the sun's rays are more vital than ever. Once the grapes are hand-harvested at full maturity, minimal intervention winemaking commences. The finest grapes are gently pressed, and the resulting juice spontaneously ferments with indigenous yeasts and without the addition of sulfur. The wine then rests on its lees for a period, until achieving the perfect balance between body and acidity.
The result is Lajibe Marcel, an extraordinary cuvée named after its proprietor, crafted entirely without intervention, showcasing the intimate connection this former Olympic fencer has with wine. A genuine gem available in very limited quantities...
