About K. Descombes Morgon
Forging one's own path is never an easy feat, particularly in the challenging times we face; yet, Kevin Descombes did not hesitate when, in 2013, he decided to strike out on his own and craft his own wines. The standards were lofty, the expectations stringent. His father, George Descombes, had set the bar exceedingly high, and to flourish under the elongated shadow of one's father is no small task. Nevertheless, it's in his blood, and he has effortlessly proven that he is up to the challenge. His most lauded creation, K. Descombes Morgon, stands as a testament to his skill.
Straight from the A.O.C. Morgon in Beaujolais, south of Burgundy, comes this single-varietal red made from gamay vines rooted in the mineral-rich soils of the region. Specifically, granite forms the foundation of the six hectares of vineyards that Kevin Descombes cultivates today, eschewing all chemical products. While there may be no official certification or document to prove it, Kevin is adamant that organic farming is the sole path forward to ensure both the future of his vines and the integrity of the Beaujolais name. Some of these lands are inherited from his father, who has also been a staunch advocate of this style of winemaking.
Carbonic maceration is another hallmark of his identity. Kevin Descombes consistently works with the healthiest bunches of grapes, which he vinifies whole, without crushing or destemming. In this fermentation process, the juice is extracted under the weight of the grape clusters themselves, spontaneously fermenting with indigenous yeasts. These minute microorganisms, unique to the A.O.C. Morgon area, are paramount; without them, there is little to be done, for it is through their activity that the wines are able to express the singular and inimitable nuances bestowed by this region.
When it comes to allowing the terroir to speak for itself, Kevin Descombes is a masterful linguist. His prowess as a translator has taken many by surprise. What about you? Are you ready to be astonished by K. Descombes Morgon?
2022 | K. Descombes Morgon 2022 is a dynamic and exuberant red wine. As you bring the glass closer to your nose, a bouquet of scents greets you, with ripe plums and fresh cherries standing out prominently. On the palate, it is luscious and brimming with fruit, accompanied by a texture that beckons one to continue sipping. This youthful specimen delivers an unadulterated and straightforward expression of the grape and its terroir, ideal for those who revel in pure and unadorned flavors. |
