About Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence

The term matriarchy is emblazoned in uppercase on the bottle of Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence. Colette, Laurence, and Catherine—mother and daughters respectively—are three names that must not be forgotten. A triumvirate that took the helm of Domaine Weinbach following the demise of Theo Faller, husband and father. This perfect trio has upheld the family estate's reputation as a bastion of excellence in Alsace. Regrettably, Colette and Laurence are no longer with us. Laurence first passed away tragically from a heart attack at the tender age of 41. Her mother Colette followed shortly thereafter. However, their essence is amply captured in their wines, with Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence being one such example.

Each bottle from Domaine Weinbach tells a story, paying tribute to the family's pivotal figures. In this case, it is Laurence's turn to be commemorated, her memory enshrined in the elegance and delicacy of a gewürztraminer. What better way to honor her? In total, Domaine Weinbach (a name that translates to 'wine river'), boasts 38 hectares nestled at the foot of the prestigious Schlossberg hill, esteemed as a grand cru. Yet, to trace the origins of Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence, one must venture to another renowned location, the Grand Cru Furstentum, situated in the Kaysersberg valley to the north of Alsace. Below lies the lieu-dit Altenbourg, a site perched on a gentle slope, between 200 and 300 meters above sea level, with marl-limestone and sandstone soils (slightly more than in Furstentum). It is this higher sand content that causes grapes in Altenbourg to ripen earlier. Here, under a dry, warm climate with scant rainfall, the gewürztraminer vines thrive exquisitely.

For years, Domaine Weinbach has alternated between biodynamic and organic farming practices. The initial foray into biodynamics occurred in 1998, encompassing a mere eight hectares; however, the results were so favorable that the method was adopted throughout the vineyard. All tasks and decisions related to the crops are discussed and deliberated as a team, typically over lunch, where the collective determines the optimal course of action for each bunch and plant. Harvesting is conducted manually, with rapid transportation to ensure the grapes arrive at the winery in peak condition. There, the utmost respect is paid to the vineyard's labor, hence the winemaking process is non-interventionist. This means that human involvement is limited to only when necessary. The grapes for Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence are meticulously selected and gently pressed, gradually applying pressure to ensure the quality of the extracted juice, free from impurities that could sully the flavor. Typically, the extended fermentations at Domaine Weinbach are a hallmark of their identity. And so it is with Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence, where indigenous yeasts (eschewing commercial strains) perform their magic in aged oak barrels, contributing significant complexity to a wine that will mature over nine months in large wooden vats known as foudres.

Add the name Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence to your wine tasting list. Never has a single-varietal gewürztraminer been so emblematic.
