About Domaine Mee Godard Côte du Py AOC Morgon Tinto
French by name, Korean by origin, and with a destiny she has carved out for herself. Mee Godard fully embraces her heritage. Born in Korea, this oenologist was adopted at just six months old by a French couple. While her past has greatly influenced her present, she is the author of her own future, seeking new paths and alternatives. As part of a new wave of young vintners revitalising the wines of Beaujolais, Mee Godard is one of the most compelling oenologists in the contemporary wine scene.
Domaine Mee Godard Côte du Py AOC Morgon Rouge is one such wine. Since 2013, Godard fell in love with this region in southern Burgundy, in the centre-east of France. Her journey had taken her to vineyards in the United States and other parts of France; however, it was during a tasting with friends that Godard—accustomed to the youthful Beaujolais Nouveaux—began to ponder the myriad of possibilities these reds presented. The most challenging aspect is not conceiving an idea, but bringing it to fruition. And Godard did not hesitate to get to work. For this purpose, she acquired five hectares in the A.O.C. Morgon from the Marmonnier family, where she decided to focus on three of the area's ten lieux-dits. The most renowned among them, Côte du Py, is the birthplace of Domaine Mee Godard Côte du Py AOC Morgon Rouge.
Mee Godard's revolution begins in the vineyard, where she consistently opts for organic and biodynamic cultivation, with an emphasis on the quality of the grape clusters and yields. Indeed, the gamay grape is quite prolific, requiring careful management as an overabundance of clusters can compromise the quality of some (better to have a little of something good than a lot of something mediocre). For this reason, green harvesting or pruning is a crucial task for Mee Godard, who always works by hand, eschewing any mechanical assistance. In the winery, changes are also afoot. The traditional rapid and accelerated vinifications—where sugar and industrial yeasts are added to ensure the reds are ready by the third Thursday of November (the release date for Beaujolais Nouveau)—are replaced by spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, prolonged macerations (around 16 days), and extended resting periods (approximately one year), during which Domaine Mee Godard Côte du Py AOC Morgon Rouge will come to express the unique character imparted by the granitic soils and moderate climate of the A.O.C. Morgon.
Without a doubt, Mee Godard is both the author and the protagonist of this new chapter in the story of Beaujolais reds. And she is writing her history with her wine, Domaine Mee Godard Côte du Py AOC Morgon Rouge. What better narrative and plot could there be?

2020 | Domaine Mee Godard Côte du Py AOC Morgon Tinto 2020 is a concentrated, well-structured, and taut wine. The structured and finely-grained tannins are set to define the character of this red, which currently presents as youthful but has the potential to evolve positively over the next two years. At present, in the glass, it exhibits fruity notes of sweet berries, plums, smoke, and spices, culminating in an exceedingly mineral finish. |
