About Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Few things in life are as beautiful and sincere as a tribute. It doesn’t matter what shape they take or how they are given. The fact is any way is a good way to show another person all our admiration. When it comes to Jacques Perrin’s sons, they have chosen to do this through a red wine: the Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
This wine, whose first vintage was released in 1989, has become one of the most important and special wines made by Château Beaucastel, one of France’s most renowned wineries. This business was founded in 1549 by Pierre de Beaucastel and has been cultivating vineyards for centuries in the northernmost part of the A.O.C. Châteauneuf-du-pape, in the southern Rhône Valley. Over the centuries, this company has changed owners. The number of hectares they cultivate may also have increased. But what has remained an undeniable fact is the high quality standards that this company has demonstrated throughout its history. In fact, Château Beaucastel were pioneers in the 1950s in implementing organic and biodynamic agriculture in their crops, always with the conviction that to produce expressive wines “grapes must have flavours”.
In this way, the 100 hectares of vineyards are a true reflection of the terroir. Of all the elements, the soil is the most unique and exclusive, made up of rounded cobbles known as galets. These are large stones, which have a key role: to absorb the heat of the day and release it at night. Thanks to this soil, which are completely unique, the vines ripen well in the Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool, wet winters. Another essential element in this area is the mistral, a cool wind that blows at high speed and dries the environment, preventing the spread of fungal diseases.
Thanks to these factors, together with the manual management of the vineyard, Château de Beaucastel achieves the maximum expression of the varieties used to make Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape. For this reason, it is perfectly understandable that wood plays a secondary role when it comes to making this red wine. The grapes are firstly harvested by hand, carefully selecting the best bunches. Only the highest quality grapes are taken to the winery, where they will be destemmed and vatted to begin fermentation (which will be carried out at a controlled temperature for 15 days). All varieties are vinified separately, enhancing the warmth and colour of Grenache and Cinsault; developing the freshness and aromas of Counoise and Picpoul; and working on the structure and flavour of Mourvedre, Syrah, Muscardin and Vacarese.
Before barrel aging, the different tanks of Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape are blended to create the final blend. Once this key task, the teaching of which is passed down in the Perrin family from generation to generation, has been completed, Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape is now ready for its year of aging in French oak barrels where, between rackings, it will become the most special way to remember Jacques Perrin.

2018 | Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2018 is a succulent and harmonious red, impeccably balanced. On the nose, according to Joe Czerwinski's review for The Wine Advocate, it can be described as "glorious," with profound complexity, revealing cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. These fruity notes are seamlessly integrated with bay leaf, lavender, and thyme, and are further enhanced by deeper scents of black olives, roasted meat, star anise, and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is intense and full-bodied, structured with smooth, robust tannins. The finish is extensive and persistent, slightly tight but utterly delightful. |
