About Azienda Agricola Campogrande Telemaco

Greek mythology has had a strong influence on our culture, art and literature. They used stories and tales to explain the origins of the world and tell us about the lives and adventures of people who we hear about in our daily lives. For example, we have all heard of Ulysses, a legendary hero who, after the Trojan War, wandered around the Mediterranean for years trying to return home. Meanwhile, at home, his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus never gave up hope and the son never stopped looking for his father. It is this same perseverance and tenacity that results in a project like Azienda Agricola Campogrande getting started and achieving success. Created by the prestigious Barolo winemaker, Elio Altare, with his friend Antonio Bonanni, they realised the great winemaking potential of the wild Italian Cinque Terre and decided to recover the authenticity of the place.

In honour of this perseverance, they created Azienda Agricola Campogrande Telemaco. A white wine made from the native Bosco and Albarola varieties that Altare himself planted on steep slopes composed of sand, stone and granite. Their work is part of the DOC Liguria di Levante (Liguria) and their land is difficult to access, so all work is manual and organic. In the winery, they decided to experiment with vinification by putting part of the white wine in a small oak barrel for at least 14 months. A real gamble that turned out to be a success thanks to the intrinsic strength of the varieties they planted. Finally, the wine is bottled without clarifying or filtering.

Campogrande is undoubtedly a new and fascinating adventure for a brave man who challenged the traditional Barolo winemakers back in the 1980s. A great champion of the maximum expression of the region who has made wines like Azienda Agricola Campogrande Telemaco, bringing our attention to another wine-growing region that has been underappreciated until now. A limited production wine full of minerality and unique floral aromas.
